THE CONVOYS OF SHAME

Buy at

Director: Raphaël Delpard

What is the price of peace? During World War II, the French were forced to ask themselves that very question, when the Nazi war machine marched through their streets. Forced to collaborate with Hitler in exchange for their safety, the French were torn.

The controversial armistice treaty between the occupier and occupied is laid bare in Convoys of Shame, an unprecedented documentary that shows the true cost of compromise. This tell-all film explores the grim logistics of the Holocaust. Even genocide requires hard work, and the French company SNCF was responsible for the organization, care, and shipment of over 76,000 Jews, 20,000 gypsies, and 38,000 rebels to concentration camps from 1940 to 1944.

The film illustrates this calculated, methodical collaboration through archived footage, dramatic re-enactments, testimonials, and interviews with historical experts. This rich tapestry blends seamlessly into a chilling narrative about the depths of human desperation, and the effects of war on every facet of a country's economy.

CONSULTATION

Buy at

Director: Hélène de Crécy

Within the walls of family doctor Luc Perino, patients lay bare their pains and joys; a cold, a birth, a stiff neck, alcoholism, general depression.

Does Dr.Perino have the answers? These consultations confront us not only with the necessity of healing or curing clinical cases but also with a diagnosis of humanity that is anguished and hard to please in its relationship with society and the healthcare system.

In this face-off between physician and patients, the film explores the evolution and excesses of the family doctor's profession and reaches the complex conclusion that, in order to remain the go-to guy in the health care field, he must be as much "life counselor" as doctor, a role he feels unprepared for.

The doctor must also reconcile a personalized approach to his patients with state of the art techniques for growing numbers of "users" while keeping down costs to a level acceptable to society.

Between laughter and tears, birth and death, the film is a reflection of Dr.Perino's working days, filled with humans.

Director: Lee Jun-Ik
Cast: Lee Jun-Ki, Kam Woo-Seong, Jeong Jin-Yeong, Kang Seong-Yeon, Jang Hang-Seon

At the height of the 16th-century Chosun Dynasty, a pair of rural male actors—boisterous, macho Jang-seng and quiet, feminine Gong-gil—travel to Seoul and team up with a struggling acting troupe. When their irreverent show—complete with enough bawdy humor and gender-bending to make a contemporary audience blush—mocks the famously hedonistic king, they get more than they bargained for. After being promptly arrested, they’re given a chance to spare themselves if they can make the king laugh. To everyone’s surprise, the ecstatic monarch loves the show and names the actors official court jesters, giving them more extravagant food and shelter than they’d ever imagined. But the king’s attentiveness to Gong-gil makes it quickly apparent that humor isn’t the only thing motivating his generosity. The king’s mistress, the country’s ministers and Jang-seng soon grow suspicious, and jealousy and anger spring from all sides.

DURAKOVO
VILLAGE OF FOOLS

Trailer

Buy at

Director: Nino Kirtadze
Cast: Mikhail Fyodorovich

Durakovo. The ironically named Village of Fools. A secluded town 90 miles outside Moscow brews old ideals in hopes of a revitalized regime. Mikhail Fyodorovich, (aka Mikhail Morozov) rules this small community with concepts of God, Tsar and Fatherland. That happiness is only around God, the Tsar does God’s bidding and the people work hard in life to achieve the will of the Tsar.

Prayer, labor and the political notion in contrast of Western Democracy is of frequent discussion. Mikhail makes known his stance in politics frequently, with those in his charge or with politicians from the capitol: to rebuild Russia to its former glory, criticize their leaders of the last thirty years and denounce Western ideals. He preaches the hand of God, the foundation he is laying, the old ways he is restoring, will one day win out over the US and it’s politics.

A mix of hard religion, firm politics and strict labor play out before the camera with little intervention or direction from the filmmaker.

Director: Olivier Bourbeillon
Cast: Claude Chabrol

Claude Charbrol (June 24, 1930 - September 12, 2010. With Truffaut, Godard, Rhomer and Rivette, The French New Wave revolutionized the way we see movies today. In this engrossing documentary, shot in the final years of life, we go deep into the mind of Charbol, the legendary director many call the French Hitchcock and The Balzac of Cinema. The director of classics such as  "Le Boucher", "This Man Must Die" and "La Rupture".

Like in his films, Charbol discusses his work amongst delicioius meals with friends, ex-wives, actors. Chabrol also speaks to us from the darkness of an isolated room. We see and hear and hear it all from the mouth of the master -- his choices, his mistakes, what he has learned in his illustrious career. Since 1958, he made almost a film a year. His works have been constantly remade in Hollywood ("Unfaithful"). This film is the last words from Charbol, his last stamp in his unmatched cinematic ouvre.
