The Strange is a bizarre film experience that will accustom you to the kind of abnormal behavior you may have only heard or read about, but never seen. Why did the couple and the mime have a deadly standoff? What type of job interview traumatized that guy forever? What meal did that teenage girl request before she starred in a snuff film? Why do people drive hundreds of miles to see this obscure Vegas band? What lesson did the Samurai warrior learn from the computer geek who dragged him through a wormhole 100 years into the future? Why does that photographer secretly take pictures of beach people with his disposable camera and frame them like they're his family? The answers are in this odd DVD you hold in your hands. Justin Lin (Fast & Furious, Better Luck Tomorrow) co-directs this dark comedy.

SCREAMING MEN

Trailer

Buy at

Director: Mika Ronkainen
Cast: Petri Sirviöo, Mieskuoro Huutajat

Meet the choir of screaming men that travels from Finland to Tokyo with the goal of getting good photographs of their Japanese audience while performing Japanese national anthem. Meet the choir that screams the French national anthem La Marseillaise at the museum of modern art in Paris even though the museum and the embassy of Finland try to prevent them. Meet the choir that treats nationalism, fascism, and power – and can only be led by a total dictator.

The Finnish Screaming Male Choir, Mieskuoro Huutajat, dressed in black suits, white shirts, and rubber ties is a unique choir which performs its repertoire by shouting and screaming. Led by the conductor Petri Sirviö, the choir has travelled during 15 years of existence from an idea in a bar table all the way to the front line of modern European performing arts, receiving the same strong reaction everywhere: the audience has been mostly exalted, and sometimes also shocked and bewildered.

The appeal of the performance of Huutajat is based on combinations of strong contrasts. The disciplined and smartly dressed male choir shouts patriotic songs and marches as well as children’s songs in original languages. Exact articulation mixes with howling and comical turns into serious without a warning. Their versions of national anthems of different countries do not always make everybody happy. When Huutajat was performing at the museum of modern art in Paris, both the museum and the Finnish embassy tried to prevent them from performing the French national anthem. When Huutajat was performing in Iceland, where it is prohibited by the law to perform the national anthem in any other version than the original, they had to find another solution.

Petit-Jean is 11 years old. He has discovered his two childish uncles, Arthur and Andre. Arthur is a model citizen. Andre has the most famous hands in town. Because they always take things, that don’t belong to him.

“When chickens in town go missing, Andre is suddenly arrested, but he denies it. That’s because Petit-Jean secretly commited the crime. When Arthur is thrown in jail without evidence, the entire town goes upside down, the towns people take sides, adultery is commited, and Petit Jean enjoys the most memorable time in his life in this Cannes Film Festival hit.”

LES PRINCES

Director: Tony Gatlif
Cast: Gérard Darmon, Muse Dalbray, Céline Militon, Concha Tavora

Nara is a gypsy who has thrown his wife out of the house because a social worker talked her into using birth control pills. Now he lives with his 80-year-old mother and young daughter. They both provide a balance for Nara's violent behavior and illegal activities, despite the constant threat of eviction.

"Les Princes" is the debut movie of Tony Gatlif (Latcho Drom). The portrait of a Gypsy family living in the almost abandoned and decaying outskirts of Paris.

One of the most remarkable features of "Les Princes" is its use of carefully chosen locations to underline the squalid conditions Gypsies must live in. Urban landscapes, decaying housing developments, seedy bars, derelict factories, this is a version of Paris you've rarely seen on film.

"Gatlif's episodic study of tmodern France carries plentiful conviction, thanks no doubt to the fact that the director is himself of Romany stock"

CHRONIC TOWN

Director: Tom Hines
Cast: JR Bourne, Emily Wagner

Truman Korovin is a lonely, sharp-witted cab driver in Fairbanks, Alaska, 1980. The usual routine of picking up fares and spending his nights at his favorite bar, the Boatel, is disrupted when his girlfriend, Emily, dumps him on one of the coldest nights of the year.

After an acid trip, Truman winds up in the local ‘loony bin’. Imprisoned in a grueling therapy group, Truman gets re-acquainted with loonies who are his old cab fares, which includes a local stripper he has insulted more than once. In this world, Truman must find or lose himself.

"Tom Hines and Michael Kamsky's shaggy movie may be more potent than Great North Weed."
-Variety

"From Michael Kamsky's smart, sardonic screenplay, director Tom Hines musters exactly the kind of askew sensibility that takes dark subject matter and cracks it open without ever selling his characters short."
